A short history
In 1930 the federal government folded its scattered veteran programs into one agency, the Veterans Administration. The home loan people mean by “VA” arrived with the GI Bill. On June 22, 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act so World War II veterans coming home could buy a house with a government guaranty behind the mortgage, often with no down payment. That guaranty is still the heart of the VA loan, now run by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
